How to savour autumn and prepare for winter

Collect conkers. On the autumn equinox, honour the harvest season with an abundant meal including bread and wine or fruit juice. Press flowers or their petals in order to stick them to a window some weeks later. Enjoy the golden hours. Make a "The days are getting shorter" playlist. Cook apple compote. Explore an unknown walking trail. Eat pumpkin-flavoured things.

Go for a walk in the rain. Wear your favourite sundress over a warm turtleneck or cosy blouse. Make things with pumpkin, like pumpkin soup, pumpkin pie, or pumpkin bread. Decorate with scented candles. Go looking for mushrooms and notice their many forms and colours (but don’t eat any unless they’ve been inspected by an expert). Craft a papercut lantern. Make a reading list for the dark and grey days to come. Have a Samhain or Halloween feast.

Drink your morning coffee with a pinch of cinnamon. Collect, identify, and display fallen leaves. Drop by the library. Design your own Christmas greeting cards. Make a hearty soup from scratch. Take moody autumn photos. Rewatch your favourite "Little Women" adaptation. Add a cute little embroidery to a boring tea towel. Bake cinnamon rolls. Gift an advent calendar.

Buy your Christmas presents from small businesses. Build a funny gingerbread house. Visit an art exhibition. String paper stars, pine cones, or dried orange slices on a garland. Have an evening with friends, punch, and cutting of paper snowflakes. Watch an old Christmas film. Plan your Twelvetide activities. Take care of your and other people’s health. Celebrate the winter solstice.
